Idioms - In seventh heaven!
Every month we have a look at some interesting idioms.Enjoy!

Idiom: (n) an expression, word or phrase that has a figurative meaning that is separate from the literal meaning or definition of the words of which it is made.

  NUMBERS

Be on cloud nine
A person who is on cloud nine is very happy because something wonderful has happened.
"When the boss announced my promotion, I was on cloud nine!"

Be in seventh heaven
If you are in seventh heaven, you are extremely happy.
"Every time she wins a match she's in seventh heaven!"

Dressed up to the nines
To describe someone as dressed up to the nines means that they are wearing very smart or glamorous clothes.
"Caroline musts be going to a party - she's dressed up to the nines!"

Talk nineteen to the dozen
If someone talks nineteen to the dozen, they speak very quickly.
"He was talking nineteen to the dozen so I didn't catch the whole story!"

Look/feel like a million dollars
If you look/feel like a million dollars, you look/feel extremely good.
"With a tan and a new hairstyle, she looked like a million dollars."

One-track mind
If you have a one-track mind, you have a tendency to think about only one subject.
“That boy has got a one-track mind; all he thinks about is football!"

Catch twenty two
A catch 22 situation refers to a frustrating situation where you need to do one thing before doing a second,and you cannot do the second before doing the first.
"I can't get a job without a work permit, and I can't get a work permit without a job. It's a catch 22 situation


 FACES

Poker face
Someone who has a poker face has an expressionless face that shows no emotion or reaction at all.
"Despite their best efforts to make him laugh, he just sat there with a poker face / poker faced."

Face like a wet weekend
If someone has a face like a wet weekend, they are wearing a sad expression and look miserable.
 "What's wrong with Pete? He's got a face like a wet weekend."

Face the music
If you have to face the music, you have to accept the unpleasant consequences of your actions.
"He was caught stealing. Now he has to face the music!"

Put on a brave face
When confronted with difficulties, if you put on a brave face, you try to look cheerful and pretend that the situation is not as bad as it is.
"Even at the worst of times she put on a brave face."

Keep a straight face
If you keep a straight face, you look serious although you really want to laugh.
“It was so funny when she fell over! It was hard to keep a straight face!”

A face like thunder
If someone has a face like thunder, they look very angry.
"When Dad is really angry, he has a face like thunder!"

Two-faced
Someone who is two-faced is deceitful or insincere; they will say one thing to your face and another when you're not there.
"I don't trust Jack. I find him two-faced."
