Stone Soup

Paula Rego illustrates a new book with thirteen watercolour and ink paintings in which her daughter Caroline (Cas) Willing, designer and writer, retells the traditional Portuguese folktale Stone Soup, which has existed in numerous versions around the world for centuries. The book was launched recently.

As a fable it encourages cooperation in times of scarcity: a young female protagonist (not the traditional monk) saves herself from starvation by outwitting a group of villagers into providing her with ingredients for a mysterious Stone Soup that in the end is able to feed them all.

Paula Rego was born in 1935 in Lisbon, Portugal and studied at the Slade School of Art. She was shortlisted for the Turner prize in 1989 and was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters by Oxford University in 2005. She was married to Victor Willing (1928 -1988), a British painter.
