The Field of Carabobo

The Battle of Carabobo took place on 24th June 1821  on the plains to the west of Caracas, near Valencia. It was fought between independence fighters, led by Simón Bolívar and the Spanish Royalist forces. Bolívar's decisive victory at Carabobo led to the independence of Venezuela.

Mural of the battle of Carabobo
Martin Tovar y Tovar (1827-1902) is known for a series of battles painted for the National Congress.

June 24th is Venezuela´s National Day. This year will be the 194th celebration of the Battle of Carabobo.

I have visited the Field of Carabobo recently.

It has a dignified monument which was erected on the centenary of the battle, in 1921 (the arch) and in 1930 the statues with Bolivar built to commemorate the centenary of his death.
