Maracaibo Highlights




Maracaibo, the capital of the state of Zulia, Venezuela´s richest state, is the second largest city after Caracas and a very important port.

Maracaibo has South America´s largest lake (120km wide and 200km long) with enormous deposits of oil that have made Venezuela a major oil exporter and also the longest bridge in South America (8.679m).

Basilica de Chinquinquirá (La Chinita)

The image of the Virgin, painted on a small wooden board was found in 1709 by a peasant on the shore of Lago Maracaibo. It was then taken to the church. In 1942 the Virgin was crowned the patron saint of Zulia.

It is a typical plaza with colourful houses and a famous bar A que Luis where the famous gaita, Maracaibo´s music is perfomed: “Vamos todos pa’ que Luis, allá por Santa Lucía la cerveza esta bien fría y de alli te vais feliz, en la esquina de San Luis, te espero de noche y dia”
