Wreck Of Portuguese Slave Ship Discovered

The Sao Jose-Paquete de Africa, a Portuguese slave ship, sank off coast of Cape Town on its way from Mozambique to Brazil in 1794, while carrying around 500 slaves.

Officials have known the site of the wreck for some years and suspected the ship was a slave ship, but research only confirmed it recently .

Only a few remnants have been retrieved from the wreck site, a turbulent spot located between two reefs. The objects from the slave ship are to be on a long-term loan to the Smithsonian National Museum of the African-American History and Culture from the Iziko Museums of South Africa.
