November 16 is National Day of the Sea in Portugal.

“… it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea - whether it is to sail or to watch it - we are going back from whence we came”.

International Day for Tolerance

The International Day for Tolerance was created by resolution 51/95, where the UN General Assembly invited UN Member States to observe the International Day for Tolerance on 16 November each year.

Article 1 - The Meaning of Tolerance

1.1 Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human.

It is fostered by knowledge, openness, communication, and freedom of thought, conscience and belief.

Tolerance is harmony in difference.

It is not only a moral duty, it is also a political and legal requirement.

Tolerance, the virtue that makes peace possible, contributes to the replacement of the culture of war by a culture of peace.

In Declaration of Principles on Tolerance, proclaimed and signed by the Member States of UNESCO on 16 November 1995.

Boas vindas

Tinham-me pedido para dar as boas vindas:

Senhora Presidente da Associação “Mulher Migrante” na Venezuela;

Senhor Cônsul Geral,

Junta diretiva;

Senhoras e Senhores;

Anteriormente pediram-me umas breves palavras como anúncio do congresso, incluindo fotografia.

Flanders Fields 1914-2014’ Memorial Garden

The creation of a ‘Flanders Fields 1914-2014’ Memorial Garden is an occasion to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War and to thank all those who lost their lives or were injured in the battlefields of Flanders.

It is situated near Buckingham Palace, in London, and was designed by the landscape architect Piet Blanckaert from Bruges, Belgium. The Garden opened on Thursday 6th November 2014 during a very special ceremony attended by the Queen and The King of The Belgians.

Tomorrow, the Queen will be accompanied by her husband Prince Philip and other senior members of the Royal Family at the Remembrance service at the National Cenotaph in Whitehal. This year's Remembrance will be  particularly moving as 2014 marks the WWI Centenary, the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings and the end of the 13-year conflict in Afghanistan.

*The phrase "lest we forget" forms the refrain of "Recessional.", a poem by Rudyard Kiping that later passed into common usage after WWI across the British Commonwealth especially, becoming linked with Remembrance Day, not to forget past sacrifices.

The Freedom Tower

One World Trade Center opened on November 3rd. It has taken eight years to build near the site where the original complex stood until its destruction by the terrorist attacks of September 2001.

Last year it was officially recognized as the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

12 Treasures of Europe

For the The New York Times Travel section on Europe (Oct. 19 issue) special items were selected to outline 12 Treasure Cities.

Portugal was chosen for its tiles:

“Is there a bluer country than Portugal? The blue sky and Atlantic Ocean embrace the land. The blue moods of Fado, the melancholy folk music, form the national soundtrack. And all across Portugal, the typically blue designs of azulejos — ceramic tiles — are spread across churches, monasteries, castles, palaces, university halls, parks, train stations, hotel lobbies and apartment facades. The result is an embellished land of Christian saints, biblical episodes, Portuguese kings, historical glories, pastoral idylls, aristocrats at leisure, landscapes, seascapes, floral designs and, above all, geometric motifs…”

Stone Soup

Paula Rego illustrates a new book with thirteen watercolour and ink paintings in which her daughter Caroline (Cas) Willing, designer and writer, retells the traditional Portuguese folktale Stone Soup, which has existed in numerous versions around the world for centuries. The book was launched recently.

As a fable it encourages cooperation in times of scarcity: a young female protagonist (not the traditional monk) saves herself from starvation by outwitting a group of villagers into providing her with ingredients for a mysterious Stone Soup that in the end is able to feed them all.

Paula Rego was born in 1935 in Lisbon, Portugal and studied at the Slade School of Art. She was shortlisted for the Turner prize in 1989 and was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters by Oxford University in 2005. She was married to Victor Willing (1928 -1988), a British painter.

About the artist in this blog:

Time to learn about Polish Culture

Today in the embassy of Poland, in a warm gathering of friends, Anna, the current ambassadress, introduced her guests to the former ballet dancer Nina Novak, who was born in Poland in 1927.

She joined the School of Ballet of the Opera of Warsaw, in 1935, but, with the German and later Russian invasions, she was sent to a concentration camp. She managed to escape, however, and began dancing in 1948 with the Russian Ballet of Montecarlo.

She then fell in love with a Venezuelan diplomat and so rejected several invitations to join ballet companies worldwide. Nina Novak has been living in Venezuela since 1963, where she founded the Academia de Ballet Clásico Nina Novak.

Her students “don’t speak Polish but dance Polish”, seeing  the renowned mazurka as a must in any of her classes.

Time went by quickly and so, unfortunately, I had to leave before tasting samples of Polish cuisine, among them Pope John Paul II’s Kremówka Papieska / "Papal" Cream Cake.

It was a wonderful event and I very much look forward to even more samples of Poland's amazing culture!

Thousands of sketches from around the world

Luís Simões, a 35 year old Portuguese designer is expecting to spend five years, in total, on a trip that will take him around the globe. The unusual thing is that he doesn´t record or photograph those memorable days like most of us: he sketches them.

OBRIGADA!
