What is the oldest city in the world?

Aleppo Citadel

Several cities claim to be "the oldest city in the world"

Faiyum, Egypt. The town occupies part of the ancient site of Crocodilopolis. Founded in around 4000 BC, it is the oldest city in Egypt and one of the oldest  continuously occupied cities in the world.

Plovdiv, Bulgaria has evidence of continuous settlement dating back to 6,000BC.

Erbil, capital of the Kurdistan region of Iraq claims settlements dating back to 6,000BC.

Jericho, West Bank is the earliest known walled city. Fortifications date to 6800 BC or earlier. Archaeological evidence indicates that the city was destroyed and abandoned several times with later rebuilding and expansion.

Aleppo, Syria. The evidence of settlement goes back to 6,000BC, but excavations north of the city suggest wandering nomads made domestic camps here 5,000 years before that.
