Getting to know Indonesia

Today I went to the Embassy of Indonesia on the occasion of its 69th anniversary of independence.

It was celebrated with traditional Indonesian music, dancing, and an exhibition by Indonesian photographer Benny Asrul.

Indonesia is an archipelago country with more than 17000 islands. The biggest ones are Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua. Bali is Indonesia´s most popular island destination. The total population is more than 240 million people, making it the 4th most populous country in the world. Indonesia has more than 500 ethnical and linguistic groups, which define the nation´s motto “Unity in Diversity”.

What kind of diplomacy….

How did the British Embassy in Washington DC decide to commemorate the 200th anniversary of burning down the White House during the 1812 War?

   - With this cake.

The problem is that they decided to tweet its photograph with the headline “ Only Sparklers this time”. After realizing it was a proof of really bad taste they apologized.

Sintra in The New York Times

Read the article Outside Lisbon, a Verdant World of Castles and Palaces by Elisa Mala (15th August 2014).

About Sintra in this blog:

Sintra…always

Sintra-diversity and beauty

Old profession: Knocker up

...he remembers gas lamps and the days when the “knocker up” did his rounds waking up the mill workers...

The woman on the left is shooting dried peas at her client´s window using a tube as a pea shooter.

This profession was common in England and Ireland during the Industrial Revolution and remained until alarm clocks replaced it.
The knocker up used a long and heavy stick to wake people who required his/her services by knocking on their doors or windows. They wouldn´t leave their client´s house until they were sure the job was well done and people wouldn´t go back to sleep. Some were unemployed, some had other jobs.

They were popular enough for some authors to include them in their works:

"…Mr. Wopsle, being knocked up, was in such a very bad temper …"

Natural bridges

I have just read this article and it reminded me of my trip across the US ten years ago.

Berlengas, Portugal, are also worth a visit...

CR: Ice Bucket Challenge

Actors and sports figures in Europe have taken up the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. All this began in the U.S. as a way to raise awareness for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). People have been challenging their friends and relatives to dump a bucket of ice water over their head.

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the latest celebrities to take up the challenge after being nominated by Manchester United player Darren Fletcher. He then nominated Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Lil Wayne.

Una Botânica de Paz: Visitácion

de Ana Luísa Amaral  (Entre Dos Ríos y Otras Noches, 2007)

Una Botânica de Paz: Visitácion

Tengo una flor

de la que no sé el nombre

En el balcón,

en común acuerdo

con otros aromas;

la flor del beso, un rosal,

una mata de hierba luisa

Pero esos son prodigios

Para outra mañana;

es que esta flor

generó hojas de verde

asombro,

Cartagena Highlights

A wedding in Cartagena

Cartagena´s old city is its main attraction particularly the districts of El Centro and San Diego surrounded by thick walls, which together with the fortifications were built to protect and defend the city against pirates and other enemies.

Plaza de Bolívar is surrounded by some of the city´s most elegant buildings.

Palacio de la Inquisición

The small window with a cross on top is where heretics were denounced. The principal crimes were magic, witchcraft and blasphemy.

I found this spell quite funny.

Nowadays the place is a museum where you can see instruments of torture, historical objects and paintings.

The Cathedral was partially destroyed by the canons of Francis Drake when it was under construction. It was completed in 1612.

The Church of Santo Domingo was built in the 16th century. It is the oldest in the city. There is also a statue by Fernando Botero in the Plaza Santo Domingo.

A statue of Miguel Cervantes in Cervantes Plaza

Puerta del Reloj (Clock´s gate) was the main entrance to the walled town

Plaza de Los Coches. The statue of the city´s founder, Pedro de Herédia, is in the middle

Plaza de la Aduana. The old Royal Customs House was restored and is now the City Hall

Picture of Cartagena in the Museum of Modern Art

Convent and Church of San Pedro Claver

Pedro Claver was called the “Apostle of the Blacks”, the slaves who were brought from Africa.

Convento de la Popa.

It was founded 400 years ago

The views stretch all over the city

In the chapel there is an image of La Virgen de la Candelaria, the patroness of the city.

Monument to the Old Shoes honouring the poet Luís Carlos Lopes.

Monument to India Catalina, the woman who served as interpreter to Pedro de Herédia.

The archipelago del Rosario consists of 27 small islands. Only 4 are public. The others are privately owned. They are all surrounded by coral reefs and the whole area has been decreed a national park.

The islands are about 35km southwest of Cartagena.

The beaches in Cartagena are in Bocagrande. The sand is dark but the water is warm...and here it looks like you are in a shopping centre because you can buy almost everything...

The hotel we´re staying in, Bastion, which opened three months ago, is well situated - in the old city-  very comfortable,  modern and tastefully decorated.

Unfortunately the holidays are almost over and tomorrow it is time to go back home.
