Pope Francis honoured the 100th anniversary of the slaughter of Armenians by calling it "the first genocide of the 20th century" and urging the international community to recognize it as such.
The Armenian genocide was the systematic extermination of this minority from their historic homeland. The total number of people killed is estimated between 1 and 1.5 million. This happened within the territory that is now the Republic of Turkey. The Turkish government does not recognize this massacre.
I know a lady from Armenian origin, who happens to be a very good bridge player, whose family immigrated to the USA at this time. She is in her nineties. She wrote a book of family memoirs; it starts exactly reminding us of this tragedy: the Armenian genocide.
